The admissions process

There are a few stages to applying to the University of Oxford, so we want to make sure that you fully understand each step. This page takes you step by step through the application process. Remember, if you have any questions after reading this, a lot of answers can be found on our Frequently Asked Questions page or you can email the Undergraduate Admissions Officer.

To apply to the University of Oxford, all applicants must:

  1. Submit a UCAS application by 6pm on 15 October, a year before the start date of the course
  2. Check if they are required to sit an admissions test and have registered for the test by 6pm on 15 October*
  3. Check if they are required to submit written work and submit their work by 10 November to the admitting college

These are strict deadlines and your application will be severely disadvantaged if you do not complete these steps above.

UCAS application

All applicants must submit an application through UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to complete your UCAS application! If you need help with your form, UCAS have created a handy guide to filling in your application.

Admissions tests

Not every course requires applicants to sit an admissions test but it is your responsibility to register on time. You need to check whether the subject you'd like to study requires you to take an admissions test(s) as we do not accept late applications. 

Please note! For the LNAT, you must register by 15 September and take the LNAT before or on 15 October in the year you apply. You may take the test on any day when there is availability at your chosen test centre between those dates. The earlier you book, the more chance you have of getting an appointment on the day of your choice. You are therefore strongly advised to begin making arrangements as soon as possible.


Written work

Just like the admissions tests, not every course requires applicants to submit written work; some may require two pieces of work. It is your responsibility to submit the work on time. All courses list whether written work is required on the course pages on the University’s website.



Applicants will be notified if they have been invited to an interview or not at least one week before the scheduled date of the interview, with details of any variance in the published arrival times.

Interviews are a chance for you to experience college life, meet tutors, and have an interview, or rather a mock tutorial. Tutors will ask you difficult questions to make you think on your feet. We are not looking for model answers. Tutors wish to assess your interest and motivation for the subject, your intellectual curiosity and ability for critical thinking. Shortlisted candidates are likely to have at least two interviews. One or more interviews may also be conducted at another college.

If you are invited to College for an interview, we will provide you with a room and meals, free of charge. Wifi is available through the College and there will be evening activities to be enjoyed with current students and other interviewing candidates.


Final decisions

Shortlisting decisions will start from mid-November. Final decisions and notification of offers will be communicated in January. All communications will be sent via email.


The deadline for requesting feedback for 2022 entry or deferred 2023 entry has now closed. We are unable to provide feedback to those who have not yet requested it.

Feedback on admissions decisions should be requested from the college which considered the application, before 15 February in the year after the application was made. Requests after this deadline will not be processed. All enquiries about admissions decisions are dealt with on an individual basis between applicants and the college who are considering the application. At St Hilda’s, we do not share feedback with anyone other than the applicant and all requests must be submitted through the online feedback form (which will be available from 15 October until 15 February). Feedback requested before 4 January will be answered in twenty working days starting from 4 January; all other requests will be answered within twenty working days of receipt of request.
